White House goes after Comer over Beau Biden comments

The White House on Wednesday tore up Republican Representative James Comer’s “ugly” and “despicable” claims that President Joe Biden’s late son, Beau, should have been indicted along with a Delaware man who violated campaign finance laws.

Comer, chairman of the powerful House Oversight Committee, appeared on a podcast Monday with conservative commentator Lou Dobbs.

On the episode of The Great America Show with Lou Dobbs, he spoke about the case of Christopher Tigani, a Wilmington beer distributor owner who was sentenced to two years in prison in 2012 for campaign finance violations.

Tigani donated cash to the senior Biden and was investigated by US Attorney David Weiss, the same US attorney overseeing the federal investigation into Hunter Biden over his taxes.

Beau Biden, then Attorney General of Delaware, withdrew from Tigani’s case, as he had donated to his father.

Beau Biden died of glioblastoma in 2015. His father regularly brings him up in speeches, especially when he talks to Americans about health care.

“This American attorney…had a chance years ago to go after the Bidens. In fact, it was Beau Biden, the president’s other son, who was involved in some campaign donations from a person who was also indicted,” Comer told Dobbs. “But you know, nothing ever happened. So I don’t know much about this US attorney, except that he had a chance to investigate the Bidens before and he chose not to.”

“We all know he’s just been quiet for a long time,” Comer added.

A special prosecutor’s report later said there was no evidence that the Bidens knew about Tigani’s fraudulent campaign fees. That reports the Washington Post.

Comer’s comments come as he speaks out about using his power at the helm of the oversight committee to investigate “influence peddling by the Biden family.”

The GOP-led committee plans to investigate Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings in Ukraine and China.

During an appearance on Morning Joe Wednesday, White House communications director Kate Bedingfield called Comer’s allegations about Beau Biden “appalling.”

‘It’s despicable. And frankly, it says quite a lot — nothing good — about Jim Comer,” she said. “I think when the American people hear something like that from Congressman Comer, they’ll judge what that says about him. I’d say what that says about him is pretty despicable.”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre echoed the sentiment during Wednesday’s briefing.

Jean-Pierre called it “completely” inappropriate and said it showed Republicans wanting to do “political stunts.”

Jean-Pierre said the results of the midterms — which disappointed Republicans despite the GOP gaining limited control of the House — showed that Americans wanted both sides to work together.

“They want to see Congress work for them. That’s what they want to see,” she encouraged.

A request for comment from Comer’s office has yet to be returned.
