Low politics as a congressman is linked to child abuse in rival’s TV ad

  • Twenty years ago, Cicilline worked as a lawyer defending hardened criminals
  • Ad designed to boost GOP hopeful Brendan Doherty, former state police chief, as he makes his first candidacy

What do a child molester, murderer and predator have in common?

Democratic Rep. David Cicilline, according to House Republicans this week released a TV ad in Rhode Island linking them.

The ad references his freshman time as a lawyer two decades ago when he defended hardened criminals and aims to boost GOP hopeful Brendan Doherty.

Doherty, former chief of the state police, makes his first nomination.

The ad echoes an attack on Doherty’s own campaign launched last week that featured a picture of Cicilline on screen alongside the words “rapists, pedophiles and murderers.”

Nationally, Democrats are not expected to regain control of the House in Tuesday’s election. But Cicilline’s seat in small, liberal-leaning Rhode Island would be a win for Republicans, who have not won a seat in the House representing the state since 1992.

The GOP considers this year their best shot since, and both national sides poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into TV ads in the final week of the race.

The NRCC ad is “one of the loudest ads I’ve ever seen in Rhode Island politics,” said former Democratic congressman Bob Weygand.

He said defense attorneys don’t necessarily like their clients, but it’s their job to defend them, and that shouldn’t affect them personally.

The Democratic Congressional campaign committee called the ad “the worst form of gutter politics,” while Cicilline campaign manager Eric Hyers said voters deserve a debate on the issues.

The Cicilline campaign ran an ad on Wednesday focusing on the Republican ads and saying Doherty “doesn’t want to talk about his agenda.”

Asked about the honesty of an ad attacking a lawyer for defending those accused of crimes, NRCC spokesperson Nat Sillin criticized Cicilline for choosing to “fight for violent criminals” rather than victims.

David Cicilline chose to represent convicted child molesters and murders. He chose to make it his profession,” he said.

It’s “one of the harshest ads I’ve ever seen in Rhode Island politics,” former Democratic congressman Bob Weygand told the Washington Post, adding that Cicilline’s work shouldn’t reflect on him personally.
