Top Democrats said their goal is to “just stop stupid stuff” and “put people before politics” when they made their first attempt to devise a strategy to try to take back the House in 2024.
At their conference on annual issues, House Democrats will huddle together in the coming days and hear from top buyers as they craft an agenda to fight back against Republican control and keep themselves going to take back the House in 2024.
“We have 18 seats that have Republicans in them that President Biden won in 2020, and so we have an incredible opportunity there,” Rep. Suzan Del Bene (D-Washington), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), to reporters at the conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
Republicans currently control the House with a four-seat majority.
“We want to make sure people see what the Republicans are — what their message is, what’s extreme. It’s not focused on the needs of the American people.”
Democratic House leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York said he and McCarthy “agree to strongly disagree on a range of issues, but try not to be unpleasant to the good of the institution and the country.”
“If Republicans get control, what’s one of the first things they did? They use significant resources from their committee staff and attention, time from their members to conduct a congressional hearing on Twitter. So that’s a contrast we’ll draw,” said Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), Vice Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.
Lieu said the “stupid things” include blocking a national abortion ban and getting Congress to raise the debt limit.
“The idea that we’re going to lecture the people who consistently crash the train when they’re in power is ludicrous,” added Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who said 25 percent of the national debt during Donald Trump’s presidency was built up.
Jeffries often made use of some favorite Democratic buzzwords – “extreme MAGA Republican.”
The Democratic leader was asked about his relationship with Chairman Kevin McCarthy, who has so far been cordial despite their differences.

“If Republicans get control, what’s one of the first things they did? They use significant resources from their committee staff and attention, time from their members to conduct a congressional hearing on Twitter. So that’s a contrast we’ll draw,” said Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), Vice Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus
He said he and McCarthy “agree to strongly disagree on a whole range of issues, but try not to be unpleasant to the good of the institution and the country.”
“However, one of the areas where we will strongly disagree concerns the irresponsible attempt by extreme MAGA Republicans to hold our economy hostage and risk our debt default – that would be catastrophic for the American people. ‘
McCarthy and President Biden are at odds as Republicans push for spending cuts in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. President Biden is expected to release his budget next week.
When asked if McCarthy qualified as an “extreme MAGA Republican,” he said, “The extreme MAGA Republicans are in charge of the United States House of Representatives right now, and that’s a bad thing for the American people.’
