Liam and Olivia are the most common names for baby boys and girls in the US in 2022 – for the third year in a row, both names came out on top.
Although the most common names have remained unchanged, Dutton was the name with the fastest growing popularity. It is the surname of the fictional Dutton family in the hit Western TV series Yellowstone.
Given the popularity of the show, it now seems like a growing “it” name for a newborn.
The Social Security Administration recently released its annual list of popular baby names. The agency tracks baby names in every state based on Social Security card applications.
Liam has been the most popular name for boys since 2017, while Olivia displaced Emma four years ago in 2019. Emma is now in second place.
Luna was the only new name to appear in the Top 10, replacing Harper.

The agency has been compiling the list since 1997.
“The list reveals the effect of pop culture on naming trends,” the Social Security Administration said.
Yellowstone emerged as perhaps the greatest influence on new parents. The neo-western starring Kevin Costner debuted in 2018. Kayce and Rip, other characters on the show, also saw a boom in popularity.
Costner, who plays John Dutton on the TV show, the owner of the Yellowstone ranch. It was recently reported that Costner will not return in the fifth season after starring on the show.
The news came after his wife’s surprise divorce
Dutton rose to 835 on the Social Security list, a change of 986 places from 2021. It is the last name of the fictional family featured in the series, and it counts Costner’s John Dutton in its ranks.
Kayce, as in Kayce John Dutton on the show, moved to the 587th most popular name, up from 1,077 the year before. Luke Grimes plays Kayce.

Also from Yellowstone, Rip also attracted some name attention, but it didn’t crack the top 1,000 in Social Security. Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler borders Dutton as John’s son-in-law.
In third place for girls’ names is Charlotte, followed by Amelia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, Evelyn, and Luna. For boy names, Liam is followed by Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, William, Henry, Lucas, Benjamin, and Theodore.
Other names are rising fast for boys: Chosen, Khaza, Eithan. For girls, Wrenlee is followed by Neriah, Arlet, Georgina and Amiri.
The latest data from the Social Security Administration shows that 3.64 million babies in the U.S. received Social Security cards last year, slightly more than in 2021.
The SSA’s website also allows users to research how common names are in certain states. For example, William and Olivia were the most popular names in 2021, while Oliver and Evelyn were the most common in Oregon.
