Ryan Feltner has suffered a basilar skull fracture and a concussion after being hit by a 150-mph airliner belonging to Philadelphia Phillies’ Nick Castellanos, the Colorado Rockies said.

The ball went off the right side, back of Feltner’s head, and he immediately crashed to the floor as the ball deflected toward first baseman CJ Cron.

The 26-year-old left the field with the help of two staff members and spent Saturday night in hospital, but will not require surgery.

“Overall, he’s doing well,” Colorado manager Bud Black said before Sunday’s game. “I think the feeling is that it could have been worse.”

Black said Feltner was “still fairly lucid” and texted his teammates, his parents, the team’s medical staff and the manager on Saturday. Black said he thinks Feltner will be back with the team on Monday or Tuesday.

While the crowd was quiet, Feltner finally sat up and then stood up.

“He just needs time for the fractures to heal and the concussion to subside,” Black said. “Everything I’ve been told here this morning looks good.”

“A lot of remorse, concern, worry,” Castellanos said after the game. “I don’t know, I’ve turned into a softy since I had kids. I don’t like that kind of thing.’

Feltner didn’t seem to lose consciousness. He lay on his stomach before his eyes narrowed as two members of the Colorado training gear sprinted for the mound.

Feltner had walked four batters in a 40-pitch first inning that saw the Phillies take a 4–0 lead.

After he retired the first two batters in the second, he gave up a double to Bryce Harper before Castellanos got to bat.

Feltner was a fourth-round pick for the Rockies in 2018. He entered the game with a 2–2 record, striking out 33 in 35 1/3 innings.

The Rockies then lost 7–4 to Philadelphia and remained bottom of the NL West, eight and a half games behind the LA Dodgers – the division’s first seed.

“Ryan Feltner is under observation at a local hospital and is undergoing further investigation,” the Rockies’ official Twitter account shared after Saturday night’s loss.
