Spain midfielder Rodri launched a bitter post-match attack on Scotland’s ‘time wasting’ approach at Hampden on Tuesday.

The Manchester City star was eclipsed by United rival Scott McTominay, whose two goals sealed an epic victory for Steve Clarke’s men in Euro 2024 qualifying group A.

However, Rodri was unwilling to praise Scotland’s performance as he was aiming for what he claimed were the underhanded tactics.

“It’s the way they play, you have to respect that, but to me it’s a bit rubbish,” he told Viaplay. “Always wasting time, provoking you, they always fall.

“This is not football to me. For the speed of the sport you have to go further. The referee should take this on himself, but he says nothing.

“It’s a bit frustrating because we want to win. It’s hard when it’s a waste of time, a waste of time. But they have their guns. We must use our weapons and we will learn for next time.’

Asked about Scotland fans who view some of the Spanish game in a similar way, Rodri replied: “We want to go for duels, for battles – we always fight, but this isn’t about fighting. It’s a waste of time – four, five players on the floor, but this depends on the referee, not us.’

McTominay struck in each half, with Spain unable to find their way past Angus Gunn as they trailed their hosts by three points in the race to reach Germany next summer.

“When we lose, we are always disappointed, but we did a lot of good things to win,” he said on Viaplay. “In the end we weren’t enough to score goals.

“We conceded easy goals – this is football, if you conced easy goals you get penalized at the end.”
