House Republicans are now demanding testimony from Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg ahead of his possible indictment against former President Trump.
Trump revealed over the weekend that he believed he would be arrested Tuesday in connection with a case Bragg has been working on for years involving hush money payments he made to Stormy Daniels.
The letter came before Bragg even took official action, and the chairmen of three committees demanded Bragg answer for “what clearly appears to be a politically motivated prosecution decision.”
Representatives James Comer (R-Ohio), chairman of the Oversight Committee, Jim Jordan (R-Kentucky), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Bryan Steil (R-Wisconsin), chairman of the House Administration Committee, asked Bragg to take their seats for a transcribed interview with them ‘as soon as possible’.
Three Republicans, including Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, asked Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to sit down for a transcribed interview with them “as soon as possible”

The Republicans also requested all documents and communications between Bragg’s office and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
“Has the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office been in touch with DOJ about their investigation of President Trump?” Jordan, R-Ohio, mused in a tweet announcing the letter to Bragg.
Did the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office Use Federal Funds to Investigate President Trump? Alvin Bragg owes our committee answers.”
The Manhattan DA operates independently of the federal government, so it’s unclear how much influence Congress can have.
House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., told DailyMail.com in an interview that Bragg should be “brought in” to testify before Congress for his “non-case.”
“It’s essentially a form of Alvin Bragg trying to interfere in the 2024 election,” she said.
“You have a radical, far-left prosecutor and Alvin Bragg who has been funded by George Soros with over a million dollars pursuing political revenge and a political witch hunt against Joe Biden’s main political opponent.”
Democrats spoke out about the letter, accusing Republicans of interfering in a criminal investigation.
“Trump demanded this nonsensical interference over the weekend, and these committee chairs have acted completely outside their authority to try to influence an ongoing state-level criminal investigation,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, senior member of the Oversight Committee.
“House Republicans have opened a kangaroo investigation into Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg just as he plans to prosecute Donald Trump,” said New York Democrat Rep. Ritchie Torres.
“Defending Trump is not a legitimate legislative goal for Congress to investigate a prosecutor,” said Rep. Dan Goldman, D.N.Y.
“Congress has no jurisdiction to investigate the Manhattan DA, which receives no federal funding, nor has any other federal affiliation.”
Goldman added: “With four separate criminal investigations into him, Donald Trump announced his candidacy absurdly early to create a defense against ‘election interference’. This is a meritless, insincere, false and circular defense, devised by himself to defend himself.”

Donald Trump said early Monday morning that the statute of limitations has already expired on charges he expects in the Stormy Daniels case, while his ally prepared to appear before the grand jury

The letter comes after House Republicans created a select committee to investigate “weapons” within the government with the authority to investigate “ongoing criminal investigations.”
“Using a congressional committee to bully a prosecutor sounds like… arming the federal government,” wrote House Judiciary Ranking Member Jerry Nadler (DN.Y.) on Twitter.
Trump said he expects to be arrested this week on New York State charges related to his payment before the 2016 presidential election.
Prosecutors argue he violated a New York law that prohibits falsifying company records when he classified a $130,000 payment to Daniels as “legal fees.”
Trump could be charged with falsifying company records related to payments to his former attorney, Michael Cohen, who was serving jail time after pleading guilty to using campaign finance on Daniels.
The former president could also be charged with electoral law violations.
