Maria Cummins, the mother of Australia Test cricket team captain Pat Cummins, has died.

The cricketer left India after the second Test of India’s four-match series to be at home with his mother in Sydney.

Maria was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. The cancer returned in early 2022 before reaching the point where she was transferred to palliative care.

“I feel I’m best here with my family,” he said in a statement at the time.

‘I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thank you for your understanding.’

His teammates will wear black armbands during the Fourth Test against India on Friday to honor their captain and Maria.

Cricket Australia posted the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Maria Cummins overnight. On behalf of Australian Cricket, we extend our sincere condolences to Pat, the Cummins family and their friends,” the statement read.

“The Australian men’s team will wear black armbands today as a sign of respect.”

Previously, the Barmy Army, the traveling supporters group for England’s Test cricket team, paid tribute to Maria by playing a song in her name during a Test match against New Zealand.

Cummins personally thanked the Barmy Army for their gesture.

“This is awesome @TheBarmyArmy, thanks. Mom was thrilled to see this and felt very touched,” he posted at the time.
