Nicki Minaj scores back-to-back number one debut on Hot Rap Songs Chart with Red Ruby Da Sleeze

After the success of her hit single Super Freaky Girl, Nicky Minaj has worked her way to the top of the charts with her first solo single of 2023, Red Ruby Da Sleeze.

The new release, the second single from her upcoming studio album NM5, features the rapper and singer back-to-back number one debut on the Hot Rap Songs chart, according to Billboard.

Leading up to Red Ruby Da Sleeze on March 3, the pop star posted promotional clips to her social media platforms, just like she did with Super Freaky Girl.

Another sampled banger, the song features elements of Lumidee’s 2003 hit Never Leave You (Uh Oh), the debut single from her first album Almost Famous.

Ruby’s rise to the top of the chart was primarily driven by sheer sales of about 41,000 in its first week, which is the most a hip-hop song has scored this year.

Among all music genres, it is second only to Miley Cyrus’ song Flowers, which scored a whopping 70,000 copies.

Super Freaky Girl, which samples the late funk rocker Rick James’s 1981 hit Super Freak, was released last August as the lead single to promote NM5 and quickly became Minaj’s third number one in the US and her first non- guided number one.

It eventually topped the Hot Rap Songs chart for 11 weeks in 2022, en route to becoming one of the biggest songs of the year.

It also made music history by becoming the first female solo rapper with a number one Hot 100 debut since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1997.

After the first release of Ruby, MInaj decided to make an extended version, the Roman Remix, with the return of her alter ego Roman Zolanski.

Named after film director Roman Polanski with a changed surname, Roman Zolanski has been described as her “twin brother” and “a demon inside her” who surfaces when she is angry.

MInaj got the idea to create alter egos in her music when she thought back to her childhood and how she created characters as a means of escaping traumatic situations, such as the frequent fights between her parents.
