According to a tweet from MDSP, the highway between Route 50 and 7th Street was closed.
Frederick’s Division of Fire & Rescue Services (DFRS) personnel were also at the scene “of what appears to be a tanker explosion,” Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor said in a Facebook post.
The mayor is asking residents to avoid the area, but images circulating on social media show residents being dragged like moths towards a flame in the tragic incident, with some standing just inches from the blaze.
MDSP said in a tweet: “Several vehicles and homes sustained damage from the flames of the fire caused by the overturned tanker.”
The environmental service has also been informed of the incident.
The truck reportedly crashed near Apple Road, causing at least “part of the fuel load to leave the road and enter the sewer system” Atlas news reported.

The emergency services are on site and it is not clear what caused the inferno.
At least one other vehicle has been wrecked on I-15 and massive traffic delays are being recorded after both sides of the highway were closed.
This is an evolving story.
