“You have to suck harder than that. The baby sucks harder than that. It’s not one constant, it has to suck,” Martha asks in the clip.

“How can I suck it harder than that?” I have no strength in my sucking [in this position],” you hear Michael snap, as he lies on the floor of their living room with a coffee mug in his hand.

WHAT IS A CLOGGED MILK PIPE?

A clogged milk duct is when one of the glands in the breast that makes milk doesn’t drain properly during a feed.

The condition affects up to one in five women, representing tens of thousands of new mothers in the UK each year.

It can occur when a baby doesn’t take the breast deep enough to feed effectively. This is called ‘shallow docking’.

But it can also arise if the breast tissue is irritated for other reasons.

This includes wearing a bra that is too tight, a seat belt that presses into the chest during a long car ride, or sleeping in a position that puts pressure on the chest.

The condition causes the area of the chest where the blockage is located to feel hard and painful.

It may also feel warm and slightly tender.

A clogged milk duct can be helped by continuing to breastfeed and getting help with a baby’s position and attachment to the breast.

If a clogged milk duct is not cleared quickly, it can lead to mastitis – a common condition that causes inflammation and pain in the breast.

Mastitis can cause a swollen, red, or dark area on the chest, flu-like symptoms, and nipple discharge. A GP can prescribe antibiotics to treat the condition.
