Leeds United are likely to be charged by the Football Association after a fan pushed and assaulted Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on the touchline at Elland Road.

The man has been charged with assault by police and has been given a lifetime ban from the Premier League club.

He entered the technical area in stoppage time of Saturday’s 2-2 draw before confronting Howe, who later said he felt his safety had been breached and the incident left him wondering: ‘What if?’ .

The FA will now talk to Leeds to determine how the fan managed to get so close to the opposition manager.

An FA spokesperson said: ‘We strongly condemn the incident involving a spectator during the Premier League match between Leeds United and Newcastle United.

“This person’s behavior is unacceptable and we will work with the police, relevant authorities and the clubs to ensure that appropriate action is taken.”

A statement from West Yorkshire Police read: ‘Police have charged a man with assault and entering the field of play. The man has been released on bail to appear before magistrates on July 21.”

Howe said, “It certainly makes you think, ‘What if?’ Moments like this should hopefully lead people to analyze things and see how we can improve safety for staff and players.

“Situations like that, no one should be faced with that, playing a sport they love and trying to entertain the country.

“No one should feel that their own personal safety is being violated. It’s something for us to think about.’
