Jon Jones underlined his status as the greatest MMA fighter in history by cutting through Ciryl Gane like a hot knife through butter at UFC 285.

The controversial American had not fought in over three years since relinquishing his light-heavyweight title to build up and make a crack at the division above.

But there were no signs of rust as he secured the first takedown he attempted, dragging Gane to the ground and leaving the Frenchman – who has had a hugely impressive young career – looking amateurish.

There were so many questions surrounding Jones and real uncertainty about the kind of form he would appear in.

His last handful of appearances at light-heavyweight have been lackluster by his own high standards and some believed he was on a downward trajectory.

Three years of pay lines, false dawns and delays finally led him back for an immediate shot at the heavyweight title, which was vacated by Francis Ngannou when he failed to agree a new deal with the UFC.

It was an ignominious start, with Jones being stopped from entering the octagon by an eagle-eyed official, who was unhappy with the way his toes had been taped.

After cutting the tape between the two of them, Jones was allowed to continue, but the start of the fight itself wasn’t ideal either.

On the first proper exchange, Gane landed a kick to the groin, causing a momentary delay before ‘Bones’ shrugged it off and continued.
