Amid the destruction and damage of Hurricane Sandy, a New Jersey couple celebrate the miracle of life after enduring a terrifying ordeal to bring their baby boy into the world.
A pregnant mother went into labor as the superstorm raged in the northeast on Monday night, forcing the mother-to-be to seek medical attention under dangerous conditions.
Although she was only 35 weeks pregnant, 34-year-old Christine Schleppy began going into labor at her home in Skillman, New Jersey, just as the hurricane wreaked havoc on the Garden State and all residents were warned to seek shelter and move in. to stay.

Christine and David Schleppy get a happy ending after the worst of Superstorm Sandy
Desperate for medical attention as her contractions increased in frequency, her husband, David, called 911 and emergency personnel braved the horrendous weather conditions just as the storm made landfall.
“We knew there were a lot of trees falling and roads being closed left and right,” her husband David said ABC news.
First responders attempted to transport the couple by ambulance to a hospital in Princeton, but flooding and dangerous road conditions made that impossible.

Aftermath: Scenes of desolation on the New Jersey coast
Then the ambulance got stuck in the mud and because the mother was in terrible pain, she was transferred to a fire ambulance to take her the rest of the way.
“It was definitely stressful,” her husband said.
The ambulance was finally able to reach a mobile medical unit set up by Hackensack University Medical Center, which had temporarily crouched down in the gymnasium of a local church.
The Schleppys welcomed a healthy baby boy, Liam Alexander, at 11 p.m. Monday.
The newborn weighed 5 pounds and 2 ounces. The pair already have five children, but their latest addition is certainly the most memorable arrival of the brood. Mother and child are said to be healthy and doing well.
They had been transported to a nearby hospital until they could return home.
