Dozens of Democrats joined Republicans in voting for a House bill that would require President Biden to offer an inflation impact assessment before issuing executive orders.
The final vote count was 272-148. Four right-wing Republicans — Representatives Bob Good, Va., Andy Biggs, Ariz., Matt Rosendale, Mont., and Chip Roy, Texas, voted against the bill. Fifty-nine Democrats voted in favor of the measure.
The bill, titled the Reduce Exacerbated Inflation Negatively Impacting the Nation (REIN IN) Act, was tabled after consumer prices rose 0.5 percent between January and February, representing an annual increase of 6.5 percent. That figure is lower than a peak of 9.1 percent last June, but was still higher than expected.

The bill requires the Council of Economic Advisers and the Office of Management and Budget to prepare a report for any order with an estimated impact of at least $1 billion.
For example, Biden’s student loan plan, which is expected to cost about $500 billion, would be subject to an inflation impact assessment. So are some of its energy EOs, such as revoking the license for the Keystone XL pipeline.
Republicans have blamed the Biden administration for the inflation numbers. Many blame the spending bills he pushed through Congress and loose monetary policy at the Federal Reserve.
The Republicans opposed the legislation because they thought it would increase paperwork while doing little to stop the Biden administration, DailyMail.com has learned.
Democrats who voted against the bill also thought it was unnecessary.
“Today on the floor we are going to consider something called the REIN IN Act. This is the big Republican plan for the economy. It’s three pages. It calls for reports that many people think are duplicate and unnecessary. That’s their plan,” Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said at his weekly press conference.
The bill was spearheaded by Representative Elise Stefanik, Conference Chair and New York Republican, along with Ways and Means Chair Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Patrick McHenry, RN.C.
“As every hard-working family is forced by Bidenflation to pay more for almost everything,” Stefanik said in a statement on the bill.
