New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu said no one wants to see a replay of Jan. 6, but warned that at the very least there will be a “political circus” surrounding a possible impeachment against Trump.
Donald Trump said he expects to be arrested Tuesday in the culmination of a New York district attorney relating to his hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The former president called on his supporters to protest his impending indictment, which has led to fears that another politically violent event, such as that of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, could occur.
“When someone calls for protests, you always want to make sure they are peaceful,” the GOP governor told CNN’s State of the Union program on Sunday. And we know that’s going to happen. And that has happened before. In long history, in recent history in America, there have always been people who protest against what they see as an unjustified arrest or an unjustified charge.’
“But you want to make sure it’s peaceful,” he insisted. “We don’t want history to repeat itself in overly negative ways.”
Despite claiming that it is everyone’s responsibility to make sure they act in a way that has a positive impact and doesn’t turn violent, Sununu admitted that chaos is likely to ensue around any Trump impeachment or arrest.
NH Governor Chris Sununu said no one wants to see a ‘replay’ of January 6, but warned there will be a ‘political circus’ surrounding an impeachment against Trump
“You can’t just pin it on the former president — it’s our responsibility, right, in society, in our communities, to make sure that if we have something to say, we do it the right way, and it make sure we will have a positive impact in the future,” he said.
‘But it’s going to be a circus, isn’t it? It’s going to be a bit of a political circus,” New Hampshire’s governor noted. “There will be many unknowns.”
Trump has already quit New Hampshire as part of his 2024 bid for the Republican nomination. Others — including as-yet-unannounced Florida Governor Ron DeSantis — have also visited the early state primary.
The only announced and potential candidates who have so far spoken out against the impending indictment are former Vice President Mike Pence and biotech multimillionaire Vivek Ramaswamy.
Trump has called on the field of 2024 candidates — both official and unofficial — to speak out on the issue, claiming it is a politicization and weaponization of the justice systems to prosecute a leader in the opposition party.
Many Republicans have labeled the case and the potential indictment as politically charged.
Pence told ABC’s This Week on Sunday that the whole hush money case against Trump is a “politically charged prosecution.”
“There are far more pressing matters of the day. It’s just too bad this is making headlines,” Sununu said on Sunday morning, as news of a possible impeachment against Trump reigns supreme and leads to speculation that it has only bolstered its support and momentum in the 2024 race.
Trump announced this week that he will hold a 2024 campaign rally Saturday in Waco, Texas, which could get complicated if he is arrested or charged.
Over the weekend, the former president called on his supporters to protest, writing on his Truth Social platform, “WE JUST CANNOT ALLOW THIS ANYMORE. THEY ARE KILLING OUR NATION WHILE WE SIT BACK AND WATCH. WE MUST SAVE AMERICA!PROTEST, PROTEST, PROTEST!!!”
“I think it builds a lot of sympathy for the former president,” Sununu said of the Manhattan district attorney’s case escalation. “I think the fact that I was having coffee with a few people this morning, and none of them were big Trump supporters, but they all said they felt like he was under attack.”
“And, as you mentioned, this is probably some kind of felony in an issue from seven years ago. This has nothing to do with January 6. There are people who still think this has something to do with January 6,” he added.
So I just think the — not just the media, but a lot of the Democrats have played this wrong, in terms of building sympathy for the former president. And it drastically changes the paradigm as we enter the ’24 Elections’.
