World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf has claimed that Liverpool and England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is just a ‘championship level’ defender.

Alexander-Arnold has emerged as one of English football’s brightest young stars in recent years and has won every domestic trophy available at Liverpool since 2019.

The 23-year-old is known for his outside assists, but his defensive prowess is being questioned by some pundits and fans. Leboeuf has now given his verdict on the right-back, stating that Alexander-Arnold’s defense is a major concern and that the matter has only been covered up for so long because of the particular system Jurgen Klopp plays at Liverpool.

“Look at Trent Alexander-Arnold. I like that man, his attacking qualities. But defensively he is champion level,” Leboeuf said in an interview with the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche.

‘Nothing but [Jurgen] Klopp’s system works for him. When things don’t go as well as this season, you only see his defensive shortcomings.”

Alexander-Arnold has had a disappointing start to the season, which has coincided with Liverpool dropping points in four of their first six league games.

He also appears to be well below Gareth Southgate’s pecking order for England after failing to take the field on Friday in the squad’s latest defeat to Italy. Reece James and Kyle Walker were both chosen for him in Milan.

Leboeuf has admitted he would like to speak to Alexander-Arnold in person to get him out of his slump, urging the defender to “work at the base” to rediscover his best form.

He continued: ‘I want to take him to work on the base. I’d say to him, “Turn your head and look behind you, it’ll be better.”

Time is running out for Alexander-Arnold to make his way to the England starting XI before the World Cup kicks off in November.

He may get one last chance to impress against Germany at Wembley on Monday night, and that will be the last game before Southgate name his Qatar squad.
