An ’embarrassing’ mother has been criticized online for wearing a white ball gown to her daughter’s wedding.

Earlier this week, the anonymous parent from Canada put the floor-length dress on sale for $100 [£60] on Facebook Marketplace.

The poster shared a photo of her modeling the gown at the wedding and listed it as a “dress for the mother of the bride” – having recently worn it herself.

In addition to a lace bodice and sheer panels, the dress also features a voluminous tulle skirt that is popular with bridal gowns.

The seller then posted photos of herself giving a speech at her daughter’s wedding and a photo of her walking into the reception holding hands with her own mother.

A screenshot of the listing was then posted to Reddit – where dozens of users criticized the apparent fashion flaw.

The person who saw the Facebook ad invited others to comment on the garment, claiming it was recently worn by the parent of a newlywed couple.

They captioned the post: ‘”Mother of the bride” dress for sale on Marktplaats…’

In her post, she shared a photo of herself walking into the ceremony holding hands with her own mother, who was wearing a gold-embellished dress.

At first glance, some users said they thought the mother of the bride was the one getting married thanks to the lace ad tulle detail on her evening wear.

One replied, ‘Oh my God. I was ready to be anything, “that’s okay if the bride is okay with it”.

And then I realized that the person in the wedding dress wasn’t the bride? What the f***?’

Another added: “Yeah I thought oh it’s not too bad then I realized I’m not looking at the right dress.”

Outraged Reddit users labeled the dress as “embarrassing” and compared it to a flower girl style dress

Meanwhile, a third said they couldn’t help but cringe when viewing the footage.

“NO, that’s definitely a wedding dress,” they replied. “Wow, so embarrassing.”

While others tried to defend the mother and speculated that there was an all-white dress code for the bridal party, the original poster wrote, “It’s 100% a wedding dress.” It’s a lot of white evening dresses and formal wear that aren’t explicitly meant to be worn by a bride.’

“Holyyyyyy mother of all narcissists,” said a fifth. She wore a wedding dress to her daughter’s wedding. She looks like she’s dressing up a flower girl.’
