The way President Joe Biden gleefully grins and laughs in the faces of American reporters, you might think he disrespects them. But no, it can’t be.
He is the White House that – on the first day of administration – spoke of “deep respect for the role of a free and independent press in our democracy.”
Well Joe, I guess you would call that malarkey.
On Tuesday, as Biden sat next to the Dutch prime minister in the Oval Office, reporters bombarded him with questions about his secret documents scandal, and as always, the chief grin squeezed his lips together, shrugged at his foreign visitor and chuckled as these journalists but annoying children.
This is a habit for him: insulting the American media in front of foreign leaders.
“I wouldn’t bother answering,” he was caught on a hot microphone while telling the Philippines’ president in September.
When British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the White House last year, he took questions. Biden just sat there, as he does, arms folded, hands folded or on his chin.
“They are among the only press in the world that does this. Serious. Seriously,’ he said jovially to guests in October.
No, they’re not… seriously.
Biden wants America to see journalists as a joke. They pose no threat to him – he simply has his staff escort them out of the room.
The way President Joe Biden gleefully grins and laughs in the faces of American reporters could mean he disrespects them. But no, it can’t be.
On Tuesday, as Biden sat in the Oval Office next to the Dutch prime minister (above left), the grin grinned tight, shrugged at his foreign visitor, and chuckled as if these journalists were just annoying kids.
Cynically, he is on to something. Unfortunately, and not entirely unjustly, the media in America is about as trusted as a used car salesman with a facial tattoo.
But Biden’s act is only a thin veil. The truth is, the reporters get him because he can’t stand the heat. He is afraid to open his mouth.
When he tried to answer for his mishandling of America’s secrets by storing them in his garage, he made matters worse.
“By the way, my Corvette is in a locked garage, okay? So it’s not like they’re on the street,” he said.
You can imagine his staff slapping their palms in front of their faces. And there’s something else: Biden’s skin is about as thick as cigarette paper.
Remember, this is the man who desperately grabbed Obama’s shoulder and begged for attention while everyone else crowded around the former president. He often snapped at the press and more often than not spoke disparagingly, “you…”
A year ago, on another hot mic, Biden was caught calling Fox News’ Peter Doocy “a stupid son of a bitch,” and he called NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell a “pain in the neck.”
When he pressed in October about his lack of appearances during the campaign and the implication that candidates who weren’t on the ballot box wouldn’t appear with him, he whined, “That’s not true, there’s been 15, count, kid, count ‘. female reporter.
When asked what limits he would place on abortion, instead of giving a coherent answer, he stammered, “It’s Roe v Wade. Read it, man, you’ll learn.’
What a jerk.
For as long as TV cameras have existed, presidents have had playful, sharp, and even controversial retorts with those covering them.
We all remember Donald Trump being pilloried for calling the media “the enemy of the American people,” but at least he took their questions. So why does cantankerous Grandpa Joe get a pass for his mocking approach to the men and women charged with informing the American people?

Trump’s anger has generally been directed at the news media as an institution, not at individual reporters on a personal level. In fact, he seems strangely on good terms with some of his harshest critics, like Maggie Haberman and New York Times’ New York Times. Olivia Nuzzi from the magazine.
When Biden claps back at those pressuring him, it’s not about the attitude of journalism, but rather outrage that these petulant practitioners of the Q and A have the audacity to even question him.
He’s mean. Annoying.
In Biden’s mindset, any question that challenges him, and let’s face it, apart from Doocy are few and far between, must be the result of a reporter acting in bad faith or simply being stupid.
This is a very dangerous attitude for the most powerful man in the land. It may provide some insight into why his administration never pivots, never adapts to the facts on the ground, on almost every issue, from the border to the economy, to energy policy and everything else.
This attitude of arrogant contempt has never been more repugnant than it is now as Biden faces legitimate questions about the most serious scandal of his career. His lawyers have almost admitted he broke the law, but Joe thinks these young roving reporters should shut up while a special counsel investigates what happened in a dark corner of the Justice Department.
Well, it doesn’t work that way, man. In fact, if CBS News hadn’t broken the classified documents story, Biden would have loved to keep Americans completely in the dark about it, as he had done for weeks.

Now reporters who in the past have meekly bore the brunt of Biden’s malice to continue their favorable reporting are visibly and audibly frustrated at being lied to since this scandal began.
On Friday, Biden sent his hapless press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to the briefing room to relay incorrect and incomplete information about how many documents had been found. With the White House not even bothering to update her, she admits she didn’t know the facts.
Biden can’t sit out this secret documents scandal in his basement like he did in the 2020 presidential election. Covid can’t shield him from strong questioning this time around.
The people deserve better than Biden’s spiteful and sniveling antics with the press. They deserve a president who understands that he is not an infallible pope, but a politician with a responsibility to answer tough questions.
Grow a backbone Mr. President, Americans want answers.
And for God’s sake, wipe that smug grin off your face.
