Chris Sutton has accused Robbie Savage of showing a disrespect for Iran before they ‘schooled’ Wales in a 2-0 win on Friday.

Speaking on the radio in the run-up to the game, Savage was heard to say that ‘it’s only Iran’, confident that Wales would meet little resistance in achieving the victory they needed to achieve the hopes of achieving of the knockout stage alive.

But Iran dominated the early kick-off in Group B to finish 2-0 winners against 10-man Wales, with goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey receiving a straight red for stoppage time from goals from Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian.

“It’s only Iran,” @RobbieSavage8 recently said, Sutton tweeted.

‘So disrespectful. Iran deserved by far the better team. Wales is schooled. Well played Iran.’

The result leaves Wales bottom of Group B and faces a group stage elimination, with just one game to go, against group leaders England.

“We’re gutted, there’s no other way to put it,” a deflated Gareth Bale told the BBC.

“We fought to the last second and we have to go again. We’re all upset, but we need to get back on our feet right away.’

Asked if knockout stage hopes are all but over, Bale admitted they have a mountain to climb to get there now.

“It will certainly be difficult for us. We’ll have to see,” he added.

‘What can I say? We recover and we have to go again.’
