A boy has died after being pulled from a river in Barrow-upon-Soar, in Leicestershire.

Police pronounced the teenager dead at the scene after rescuing three other boys from the River Soar in the village near Loughborough.

The four boys were pulled from the water last night after a helicopter-assisted search of the Barrow-upon-Soar area.

Witnesses reported seeing a large police presence in the village last night as roads around the river were closed to the public.

Police began searching the area at 9:15 p.m. after reports that four boys had made their way into the river.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police told MailOnline: ‘At 9.15pm yesterday (Saturday 13th May) officers were called to the Bridge Street area of ​​Barrow-upon-Soar by the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.’

“Four teenage boys were reported to have entered the water.

After a search in the water, a boy was rescued, but was pronounced dead a short time later. The other three were found safe and received medical attention.

Specially trained officers support the boy’s family and talk to the other three boys.

“A file will be prepared for the Coroner and identification of the deceased is a matter for HM Coroner.”

Police closed a number of roads at 9:40 p.m. Saturday night and urged the public to steer clear.

Three roads around the river – Bridge Street, Barrow Road and Flesh Hovel Lane – were closed while officers searched the area.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a helicopter with a searchlight assisting in a ground operation.

“A police helicopter is currently hovering over Barrow-upon-Soar,” an eyewitness told LeicestershireLive last night.

“There are a lot of cops around. The floodlight is on and seems to search.’

Today, police remain in the area with part of the footpath near Barrow Road cordoned off. However, the roads are now open to traffic again.

Leicestershire Police were approached for comment.
