Dead in the air: Pilto Sergei Golev died on board a UTair Boeing 757 from Bangkok to Novosibirsk
The captain attempted an emergency landing in the Chinese city of Chengdu, but abandoned it because Golev died before the plane landed.
Senior researcher Anastasia Utochkina told Life News“The copilot died at 12:25 Novosibirsk time (5:25 GMT), three hours after takeoff.
The captain made the decision to descend, while the crew above the tannoy called for a female doctor who happened to be among the passengers.
“However, her attempts to resuscitate the man lying on the cockpit floor failed.”

Safe landing: 239 passengers were taken to the final destination of Novosibirisk airport despite Golev’s death
Airport officials maintain that the copilot was merely traveling as a passenger and was in no way, at any time, in control of the aircraft.
Irina Levit, press officer at Novosibirsk Airport: ‘The deceased pilot was traveling as a regular passenger.
‘The plane belongs to the airline UTair, where Sergey Golev worked. There was no threat to the passengers.’
Golev was a crew member – a backup pilot, ironically tasked with replacing a crew member in case they get sick.
The Investigation Department of the Russian Transport Authority has launched an investigation into the matter to determine the cause of the incident.
