More than a dozen children have been rushed to hospital after eating lollipops mixed with a ‘white substance’ reportedly handed out by a bus driver.
A crime scene has been identified at Bluewater State School in Queensland’s Townsville after up to 22 schoolchildren fell ill after eating the candy.
The students, aged between seven and 12, were treated for symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and intestinal pain after falling ill shortly after arriving at school.
It is understood that six of the students who ate the lollipops have been hospitalized, while the others were assessed by paramedics at about 10 a.m. Thursday.
Townsville Senior Sergeant Jonathan Searle said the bus the students had traveled in was being investigated and the bus driver was being investigated.

“In my opinion, the kids started showing symptoms within 10-15 minutes of arriving at school,” Sergeant Searle told the Courier Mail.
“The kids were all on the same morning bus. In my 18 years of service, this is the first time I’ve ever heard of such an investigation.’
In a statement posted on Facebook just after noon, the school confirmed that police are investigating and parents have been informed.
Carers received a text message around 11:30 a.m. saying there had been an incident involving ‘Bus 7’ and that they would be contacted if their child was involved.
“This is to advise, a number of students have reported feeling unwell after eating lollipops given to them by a bus driver this morning before school (bus 7),” it read.
“We will contact parents whose student has been affected.”
Queensland Ambulance confirmed that paramedics had been called to the school at around 10am and a number of children were being treated for ‘minor symptoms of illness after allegedly ingesting an unknown substance’.

According to the website, Bluewater State School has approximately 430 students enrolled from Prep to Year 6.
The school said the Ministry of Education was aware of the incident and advice would be made available for staff and students.
“The school staff acted quickly to assist the students while the Queensland Ambulance Service and parents were contacted,” it continued.
