Australian Idol scraps three contestants for the grand final

Australian Idol cuts three contestants ahead of the grand final as the singing contest continues to struggle with ratings

The winner of Australian Idol will be announced on March 26.

And the six remaining contestants will face a ‘culling’ in the coming week – three of which are sure to leave before the finals.

The six remaining singers are Amali Dimont, Phoebe Stewart, Josh Hannan, Royston Sagigi-Baira, Ben Sheehy and Anya Hynninen.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the final cut challenge for contestants is a way for Channel Seven to entice viewers who will vote for their favorites in the singing competition.

In its original format, the last season of Australian Idol lasted 20 weeks in 2009, but the 2023 season is coming to an end after just 9 weeks.

The much-hyped reboot has been regularly beaten in the ratings by reality show rivals Married At First Sight and Australian Survivor since its debut on Jan. 30.

According to Seven’s own data, Idol has an average of 821,000 fans per episode, including subway ratings and viewers catching up.

This compares poorly to MAFS – which remains the biggest thing on TV – with an average total audience of just under 2 million viewers per episode.

Australian Survivor, meanwhile, is a ratings winner for the controversial Channel 10.
