Australian software giant Atlassian is cutting 500 jobs just months after co-CEO Scott Farquhar toured the country on a massive recruitment drive.
It was announced that 500 full-time employees — or 5 percent of Atlassian’s workforce — would be laid off amid an economic downtown significantly impacted by technology companies.
Billionaire co-founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar sent an internal letter to staff to dissect the company’s “difficult decision” to lay off employees.
“We have made the difficult decision to rebalance our team to better position Atlassian for the long term,” the pair wrote.
“We came to this decision as a management team and with our board, but ultimately the ultimate calling lies with us as co-founders. To those who are about to leave us, we are deeply sorry.”

Atlassian’s HR, program management, and research and insights teams would be most affected by the cuts.
For the avoidance of doubt, this decision is not a reflection of Atlassian’s own financial performance as we will reinvest in features that better support our priorities.
“This is going to be hard news for any Atlassian to digest. Take the time you need to process it.’
“As we’ve said before, the calls we make during difficult times should reflect a future Atlassian that we’re all building. The future of Atlassian continues to be incredibly bright, with an enormous amount of opportunities and possibilities ahead of us.”
Mr Cannon-Brookes and Mr Farquhar told affected staff: ‘We are incredibly sorry for the impact this will have on you and your family.’
“Thank you for contributing to Atlassian.”
Employees who are laid off are offered certain benefits, including 15 weeks of severance pay, plus one week for each year of service.
A number of major tech companies, including Google and Amazon, have laid off hundreds of employees in recent months.

The announcement by Atlassian comes six months after the company was looking for 1,000 new employees who could work “anywhere”.
Co-founder Scott Farquhar hit the road and drove an Atlassian-branded RV to find 1,032 new hires to join the company in research and development roles.
“Atlassian’s work from anywhere policy (Team Anywhere) means many Aussies can realize a dream in technology without having to move,” the company said in a statement.
Most salary packages are between $100,000 and $150,000 depending on roles and experience.
The company’s recruitment drive started at Sydney’s Martin Place, but then turned into a road trip.
The so-called ‘AtlassiVan’ visited Canberra, Wollongong, Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.
