Ally McCoist believes Tottenham’s attacking players will question Antonio Conte’s tactics.

Tottenham drew 0-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League after their 3-1 defeat to rivals Arsenal last weekend.

In both games, Tottenham lacked quality in the final third and McCoist believes Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski are finding it difficult to thrive given Conte’s tactics.

Known for his defensive style of play, Conte operates with three in the back, but the system doesn’t seem to be working for Tottenham at the moment.

McCoist said of BT Sport: “When you look at a team like Spurs that clearly put in a really bad performance, a bad result at the weekend in the derby, you’re looking for a reaction.

“I think Spurs’ strengths are in the front part of the park, I don’t think anyone can argue with that. I think there are defensive question marks. I thought the game they came back in against Chelsea they were a bit firmer, is this the turning point? But I do not think so.

“The argument I think Spurs fans can make is that Conte is playing to his team’s strengths? I’m not sure. He is clearly defensive in the way he sets up his team and you have to say he is very good at that. The Spurs have only lost one league game this year, the North London derby.

“But if I’m a Kulusevski or a Harry Kane or Son and I’m on that Spurs team, I probably doubt the way we play.”

Rio Ferdinand emphasized that Tottenham was missing in the final third against Frankfurt.

Ferdinand said: “Those three strikers, whoever they are, would be further away from goal on average than at any time in their Tottenham career.

“The way we saw them play against Arsenal in the first five minutes was so deep, on the edge of the penalty area. It’s almost like looking at a copy of Atletico Madrid from years past, everyone behind the ball, and the leading striker marking one of the central midfielders.

“It’s not what the Spurs are used to seeing. The last ball in the North London derby wasn’t good enough, and today with Son and Kane, he just wasn’t there for the final piece of the puzzle, and the hardest part is putting the ball in the back or in the net, and that they didn’t have luck or that quality for the last part.’

Tottenham have taken four points from their first three Champions League matches and there is still work to be done if they are to reach the knockout stage.

In the Premier League, despite recent criticism of Conte, they are in third place and just four points behind rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham will play an away game against Brighton on Saturday, but it seems highly unlikely that Conte will make any significant changes to his tactics, even if his attacking players are struggling in the current system.
