Ali Wong opened up about her mother’s reaction to her divorce from Justin Hakuta in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The 40-year-old comedian recalled breaking the news to her mother, who took a long time to come to terms with her daughter’s breakup with her former husband.
The artist, who was spotted in Hakuta’s company last month, announced last April that she would be divorcing her husband.
Wong began by expressing that she did not expect the news of her split to affect both her public and personal life.
“I didn’t expect the announcement to be so widespread, but by far the hardest part about getting divorced was my mom’s reaction,” she said.

The Always Be My Maybe star then recalled that her mother did not want her daughter to go through with the divorce.
The comedian stated that “she looked me in the eye and asked, ‘Can you just wait for me to die?’ She literally asked me not to live a life for myself. But she’s 82, what do I expect?’
Wong went on to comment that “it was still damn hard to deal with all her fear of the embarrassment it would bring her.”
The actress also stated that after news of her split spread through Chinese and Vietnamese newspapers, her mother was contacted by various sources for comment and was able to resolve her issues.
The artist recalled that “she died a million deaths in one day and woke up the next day thinking, ‘I survived.’
Wong also stated that her mother was very close to her former son-in-law, saying that “she still sees Justin a lot.”
The actress then commented that she and Hakuta remained on good terms after their split and were in constant contact.
“We’re very, very close; we are best friends. We’ve been through so much together. It’s a very unconventional divorce,” she said.
Wong and her former husband first met at a mutual friend’s wedding in 2010 and started dating not long after they first met.

It’s all over: The two finally announced they had split last April after eight years of marriage; they are on display in 2017
The couple held a wedding ceremony in 2014 and her ex became her tour manager.
The former couple welcomed a daughter named Mari, age seven, in 2015, and two years later, they added another daughter named Nikki, age five, to their family.
The two finally announced in April last year that they had separated after eight years of marriage.
The actress then began a short-lived relationship with Bill Hader that ended amicably after just a few months.
