Adelaide United 5-1 Wellington Phoenix: A-League star misses from point blank range

Is this the MISS of the season? Wellington Phoenix star wastes chance from POINT BLANK range as A-League side get hammered by Adelaide United

An A-League player has a contender for miss of the season after a glorious chance for Wellington Phoenix against Adelaide United on Friday.

The Phoenix, looking to close the gap on second-placed United ahead of their game at Hindmarsh Stadium, fell to a two-goal deficit heading into half-time as Kosta Barbarouses had a big chance.

The 33-year-old striker pressed well to win possession from United goalkeeper Joe Anthony Gauci close to the touchline and immediately turned his attention to goal.

From a tight angle, all Barbarouses had to do was slide the ball into the empty net as defenders raced back as teammate David Ball presented for a square pass.

Caught in two thoughts, Barbarouses opted to poke the ball towards goal, but his effort was all wrong, lopsided off the far post and United survived the threat.

The hosts made their rivals pay for that huge mistake and added a further three goals to their tally as they secured a dominant 5-1 win.

More to follow.
